Hello! Welcome to my new blog, formula evie! For my first post, I thought I’d write a bit about myself, why I’m starting formula evie, and the content you can expect in the future.
To start off, a shout-out to my older sister for the name idea. We were hanging out with my mum when I impulsively announced that I wanted to start a blog- an idea I had been cooking up for around 5 minutes- and my sister immediately said I should call it ‘formula evie’, a play on Formula E and my name, Evie (duh). I am infamously indecisive so this quick thinking saved me many hours of internal debate on what this should be called, so thanks!
Whilst trying to find work experience in motorsport journalism, I realised pretty quickly that everywhere wanted to see a portfolio of work. In my 6 months as a journalism student so far, I have had about 7 stories published to our online in-house publication and none of them relate remotely to motorsports. I have somehow written 2 stories about baroque opera, but not any about F1- which is one of the joys of studying journalism; you get to learn a little bit about a lot of things and meet people who do things you had never even thought of. This is amazing and it is one of the many reasons I love my degree so much, but it is not a whole lot of use to somebody who wants to write about one specific thing. Enter my very own blog!
I became an F1 fan around May 2024, and I like to say that I caught the end of the Monaco Grand Prix on TV and fell in love, but this is a lie. I saw a video of Carlos Sainz singing Smooth Operator over his team radio on Instagram Reels, looked up edits of him on TikTok, then fell in love. I went on to watch Drive to Survive on Netflix and realised that this sport was actually really, really cool, and there was a lot more to love than Spanish men with nice hair.
The first race I actually watched was the Canadian Grand Prix, where my new-found love for Ferrari was immediately crushed by their double DNF.
Since then, my weekends have been routinely rearranged to accommodate for racing. I just turned down Sabrina Carpenter tickets because it clashes with Silverstone. I’m not even going to Silverstone. I’m in way too deep to back out now. I was already set on a career in journalism pre-F1, so I haven’t completely rearranged my life plans, merely steered them onto a different track with chicanes, straights, and a pit lane.
Daniel Ricciardo once said “Enjoy the butterflies, enjoy being naive, enjoy the nerves, the pressure, people not knowing your name.” I think this quote sums up the start of your career perfectly; I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet, but the great thing about being a 19-year-old first-year student is that you have time to figure it out. I love writing, I love content creation, I love social media, I love interviews, and I really love that there’s a space for each of them in motorsports. Hopefully I’ll end up somewhere in between them all. For now, its me and formula evie against the world, and I hope you’ll join me for the ride!
As for what that ride entails, I’ll be posting race recaps, weekly debriefs, deepdives into F1 topics (did somebody say brocedes?), racing news, and a whole lot of opinions on what’s hot in the motorsport community. Before the winter break, that was most of my TikTok content too, but in the absence of cars on track it has admittedly descended into a disorganised mess of daily vlogs and memes. It will probably stay that way, so if that’s what you’re into then feel free to follow me over there, but if you’re looking for a bit more substance then you’re already in the right place.
Welcome to formula evie!
